Typing test

Hi everyone, I have to take a typing test for a job and was wanting to know if anyone has taken one and how did you do it? I once had a person read the text and it was horrible. I will be typing a paragraph. If it was the same sentence over and over I would have no problem. I would just memorize it and go from there.
What accommadations beside a screen reader should I ask for?
Thanks

Well, having a decent reader is important, because if the person evaluating the test results penalizes you for punctuation you miss, that might be a problem. Short of that, I'd say if you can type from tape or another source, that would also be a way to go. If you want to practice assuming you're in the US and have an NLS cassette player, try taking a tape of spoken material. It can be anything. Try typing from the tape. Ideally if you use this system, you should have a foot pedal to control play, stop, rewind and fast forward, however this will at least get you acquainted with the idea of typing from dictation. If you're partialy sighted, you could use a CCTV or other video magnification device and put the material under that, but it becomes more unwieldy the more technology you introduce into the task. Hope this helps, and good luck.

Personally I would want it in braille. if its not a speed test accuracy is important although thanks to spell checker that helps.

Ok, I will give the dictation a try. As for the braille, I am not very fast at reading braille but thanks for the suggestion.

Also if possible, have the reader read the text a sentence at a time. If this isn't a timed test, have the reader repeat the text if necesary. I also think typing what's being said on tape is an excellent idea if the job is willing to accommidate for that.

It is a timed test. I have only one shot with no practice. I am waiting on a call from the HR department and see what they have in mind. Thanks for the post

What are the expections as far as how many words per minute and accuracy? That is crazy to give only one try. Good luck!!

Hi, here is an update. They made very good accommadations for me. I went in about 15 minutes early. A person read the test to me about 3 times and gave me all the little details. Like the spacing, spelling, if I needed it, etc
Then when I was timed she read it to me about 3 to 4 words at a time. It worked out very well, It did slow me down a little, but I passed!!! Even though the requirements was 1 try, they said if I happen to fail it they would give me another chance.
So if any of you ever have to take a timed typing test, this is a good way of doing it.
Now the real test is when I go for my interview on Wednesday . And hopefully Jaws will work with their applications.

Thanks for all the replies.
